Milestone Communications – Case Studies
One of Milestone’s early partners is presently poised to double the number of towers over the next 3 years on school sites. This follows a very successful tower development  program on 2/3 of high schools in this County using light pole towers that blend in with the existing athletic field lights and produced $4 million in revenue over the past 10 years.
How it all started
In 2001 Milestone won an RFP to develop a system wide partnership whereby, the school system would provide land at their high school football fields to permit the construction of stealth light pole towers. These towers visually blend seamlessly in with the other field lights. Milestone manages the process of sharing the list of sites with wireless carriers such as Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Cricket & Clearwire. The wireless carriers choose which sites best improves network coverage from the master list. Once a site is selected, Milestone obtains consent from the school & local officials to build the tower. Carriers sign leases and pay rent to Milestone, and Milestone shares revenue with the landowner. In addition to the revenue sharing, Milestone funds a one-time payment of $25,000 at start of construction for each tower.
Sustainable Income
Milestone creates capacity for up to 5 carriers per tower and anticipates within 3 years sharing $35,000 annually with the landowner. The revenue share is sustainable, growing at 3% annually.  Adding new sites can exponentially increase income. In the case of this partner, they plan to add approximately 70 poles over the next three years. Some will be Stealth Light Poles, while others will be new Stealth Tree Poles. Each of these will produce more revenue adding up to over three million dollars per year.
Milestone funds 100% of all costs including procurement, zoning, permitting, construction, leasing, and on going management. The partner coordinates the location for the tower and permits access to the site.
Milestone has built 6 towers in partnership with a Virginia park authority. There are an additional 2 sites in zoning slated for construction in the summer of 2010. This program has earned over $1.5 million in revenue over the past 7 years. Similar to the School process, Milestone was awarded a master lease agreement giving it exclusive rights to develop towers on the 50 park sites in the system.

Milestone shares the list of sites with wireless carriers who choose which sites work best  Some towers have been Stealth Light Poles, while others are traditional mono poles because the sites are large, away from homes and adequately buffered by existing vegetation. The annual revenue from this partnership will exceed $300,000 per year in 2011, and is a line item in the Park Authority annual budget.
