Safety is of utmost concern at Milestone, especially as it relates to children and families near our Smartpole sites. Smartpoles are safe for our schools and our communities; however, we recognize that there may be a concern about Radio Frequency (RF) and its potential health effects.
Wireless phones and Smartpoles (also called base stations or cell towers) are two-way radios and they communicate by producing radio-frequency (RF) energy. In the U.S., the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is charged with setting the safety standards for wireless technologies. We are proud that our Smartpoles are consistently below the RF radiation limits set by the FCC.
As part of our commitment to safety, Milestone contracts with an independent third party, selected and/or approved by the local municipality, to conduct RF emission evaluations at each of our sites annually. We want our communities to know that our Smartpoles are in compliance. Our annual RF emission evaluations are available for review, and those evaluations are also provided to the property owner.
More importantly, our agreements with municipalities clearly outline that non-compliant sites will be shut down. Additionally, the Smartpoles are inspected for structural safety on a regular basis.
